Building a Family Legacy in the Mountains of Colorado

William Pitts, the son of a slave master and an enslaved woman, came to Colorado from Missouri in 1919 to be close to his son, who'd been injured fighting the war in Europe and was being treated at Fitzsimons Army Medical Hospital. Although his son succumbed to his injuries, Pitts wound up creating a lasting family legacy. In a written request to the Lincoln Hills Company, Pitts relates that he had for most of his life been employed as a carpenter, and namely in the construction of cabins at white resorts throughout the region. He purchased land at Lincoln HIlls and built numerous cabins, such as the Zephyr View Cabin which still stands today and is still a part of the Pitt’s family and the Rendezvous Cabin and the Shangri La cabin which both are adjacent to the Zephyr View. The Zephyr View Cabin was constructed as a vacation residence, as were most in Lincoln Hills. It, like a lot of resort cabins, embodied the ideal of getting away from the city to take in Colorado's natural beauty.
